Mucosal Care and Urogenital Integrity

Beyond the skin and eyes, the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, and urogenital tract are frequently affected.

Oral involvement can be particularly painful, making it difficult for patients to swallow or maintain oral hygiene. Treatment involves the use of medicated mouthwashes and topical anesthetics to manage pain and prevent secondary fungal infections like thrush. Soft paraffin or specialized ointments are applied to the lips to prevent them from sticking together and to facilitate healing.

Involvement of the urogenital tract requires careful management to prevent long-term complications such as strictures or adhesions. In female patients, the use of topical steroids and vaginal dilators may be necessary to maintain the patency of the vaginal canal. In male patients, regular cleaning and the application of protective ointments help prevent scarring of the urethra. Urinary catheters are often placed early in the disease course if the patient has difficulty urinating due to pain or swelling. These interventions are critical to preventing permanent structural damage that could affect functional health long after the acute skin symptoms have vanished.
